A Word from our President

Richard Mantle

Was established in 1924 has a membership of about 140 including about 40 wives and partners many of whom take an active part in running the society. Members have a wide range of model engineering interests including locomotives, traction engines, clock making, stationary steam engines, and many other facets of the hobby.

A large number of the members have workshops with metal working tools and machines and have constructed their own models. The Society runs special events for charitable and other good causes throughout the year.

See Noticeboard For Events

The principle asset of the Society is the Littledown Miniature Railway which is situated to the rear of the Littledown Centre off Castle Lane East, Bournemouth. Details for finding the site and parking facilities are available, on our Contact page. The raised track is suitable for running 7 ¼, 5, and 3 ½ inch gauge locomotives.

A full description of the construction and development of the track and the associated components are detailed on out About page.

Our Gallery contains many interesting photographs which illustrate our facilities and activities.

Visitors are always welcome to the track on running days. If visitors wish to run a locomotive evidence of Third Party Insurance will be required. If using a steam locomotive a current boiler certificate will be needed.

If carrying passengers coal burning locomotives must be equipped with a spark arrester. All locomotives will require a solid bar coupling. Riding trolleys will normally be available. The anti-tip arrangements on the track may prove restrictive for some individually owned trolleys.

The Society

The Society is a member of the Southern Federation of Model Engineering Societies. The Society has a meeting usually at Muscliff Community Centre on the third Wednesday of each month. This is always well attended and in addition to the necessary society business there is usually a presentation on a subject of interest to the membership. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served. Details of the times and contents of the meetings can be found in the in the Newsletter section.

Application Forms for membership can be obtained from the secretary of the Management Committee, or download the form.
